J – JUST BE PATIENT

Within the many organisations and individuals that we continue to support, it is fair to say that some people ‘just get it’ straight away but there are others that will need a little more time. This is not a reflection on the person delivering the message. Nor is it a reflection on the person receiving the message. Here are our top tips for helping a sustainable health and safety culture:

  • Think about your delivery of the health and safety message. Some people may be embarrassed that they have struggles with retaining information or cannot read well. Perhaps it’s a more private discussions rather than a team one.
  • Can the information you’re trying to communicate be delivered in an interactive way. Perhaps using visual aids or providing a demonstration of what is required.
  • Allow team members to feel the experience themselves. Only when you are involved, will you truly understand.
  • Mistakes will be made. Things will be missed. Some information will be forgotten. Allow this to happen. Encourage and support. This will have more of a positive impact over time.
  • Don’t discipline instantly. Provide feedback and set expectations. You could drive issues underground due to fear.
  • There is no immediate solution to this. Creating a proactive health and safety culture will happen once team members see the value and want to change.
