C – CHEMICAL SAFETY

You may transport, use, store, or handle chemicals in your workplace (perhaps you do all of them). If you do, there are a few top tips to follow to ensure you remain compliant. These are:

  • Make a list of all the chemicals you have on your premises.
  • Ensure you have a material safety data sheet for these chemicals. If you don’t have one, contact the organisation you purchased them from. They should provide you with one.
  • Review the material safety data sheet. Have you got the correct storage for this chemical? What about the correct personal protective equipment?
  • Any chemicals that pose significant risk (corrosive, highly flammable, toxic), you will need to prepare a detailed and bespoke COSHH assessment.
  • Any team member interacting with this chemical must be informed of the COSHH assessment findings and trained in how to minimise risk of contact.
  • Don’t remove labels on chemical containers.
  • Place lids back onto the chemical when you have finished.
  • Any soaked cloths should be disposed of correctly.
  • Don’t forget to have good emergency arrangements in place such as burns kit, first aid kits and officers.
