B – BUILDING SAFETY

Normally this will be titled ‘Facilities’. The title isn’t necessarily important, but the responsibilities are very much the same. Organisations that are responsible for managing buildings will need to consider several health and safety requirements which include, but not limited to:

  • Fire – a fire risk assessment initially with many items that require managing.
  • Risk assessment – for users of display screen equipment (using computers), for the office environment, handling substances, manual handling tasks, accessing areas etc.
  • Gas – ensuring your boiler is serviced and well ventilated.
  • Legionella – if applicable, a water risk assessment needs to be arranged which will specifically advise on cleaning and checking temperatures amongst other things.
  • Electricity – portable appliance and fixed wiring testing.
  • Disability discrimination – Disability access assessment for employees, visitors etc, to ensure arrangements are in place.
  • Transport – a traffic management may be required if you have many vehicles using your premises or if there is a combination of large and small vehicles interacting.
  • Contractors – ensure they are controlled when working within your building.
  • Welfare facilities – ensure they are provided and kept clean.
