Top Tip Tuesday - Question Everything

Week 17 of our Top Tip Tuesday focuses on Questioning Everything

Two construction workers are looking at a piece of paper.

Q – QUESTION EVERYTHING

Organisations that experience a low number of incidents and accidents will usually view this as a positive measure of success. Of course, there should be some recognition in this indicator, but it may be right to question, how this was achieved.

You should not wait for an incident to occur before you start to ask why it happened. Good health and safety management is about asking the questions when things appear to be going right, not waiting for when things go wrong.

Here are our top tips:

  • Engage with employees when walking around the workplace. Don’t walk by. Keep an open dialogue. Discuss health and safety and see what feedback you receive. Think about employees that start early or finish late.
  • Check the risk assessments that have been prepared. Don’t wait for the next review. Challenge the content. Make sure what the risk assessments states and what is being done are matched.
  • Review the training that has been received by employees. Check to see it has made a difference and that individual knowledge has increased.
  • When delivering toolbox talks, ask open questions to attendees. Don’t just confirm if they understand the requirements being communicated but question if this is exactly how it is being implemented.
